Ian Furniss

I am a freelance travel photographer originally from Manchester, England and currently working throughout the UK, Serbia, and Eastern Europe.

I became a photographer as part of a natural progression from a background in painting and pastel. Whilst I do still like to paint occasionally, taking up photography soon filled me with a greater need to capture the beauty of a fleeting moment, at the instant it happens.

Born in England, I fell in love with Serbia at almost the instant I walked out of the arrivals hall into the warm, slightly humid air, of a late summer evening in Belgrade. A short while later, I stepped out of the taxi that had brought me from the airport to the cobbled streets of Skadarlija, and my heart was forever captured. The sweet aroma of cooked meats drifting on the wind, the frenetic notes from accordions and guitars seeming to dance in time with the laughter and joy of friends and former strangers gathered together in an impromptu celebration of life. It was a siren call I just couldn't resist!

Assignments & Commissions

As a freelance photographer I am able to undertake work, often at short-notice, throughout the UK and Europe. With 20 years experience in the travel industry, I am also available to write informative and insightful articles on a wide range of subjects for printed and web media that provide both technical and evocative commentary as required.

Belgrade is many things. It has a personality that is all its own and one which comes in part from an often turbulent history as Europe's gateway to the East. It is that history of diversity and influence which gives you the feeling of Belgrade as a magical place that could be anything you wish it to be, if only you knew where to look. Belgrade is a city to be discovered, through its streets and cafes, to its rivers and people, from its bars and clubs, to its bookshops and antiquities. Every corner you turn offers you something new and wondrous or equally, something old and enchanting.

Through my photography I give you a taste of a city and country that is fast becoming known as the heart of a new and previously undiscovered Europe.
